A FBI memo recently released under the Freedom of Information act documents that feds investigated claims made by a police informant that comedic actor Bud Abbott was a porn collector. The document was obtained by the Smoking Gun under the Freedom of Information Act.
A police informant to the LAPD vice squad that Abbott possessed over “1,500 reels of obscene motion pictures which he shows in his home where he has a projector of his own.”
The informant claimed that Abbott had approached him to find girls for a party he was going to throw, though no date was set. The police intended to raid the party, but no date was ever given to their informant – apparently Abbott either changed his mind regarding the party, or wised up to the informant.
If the police had raided the party, they planned on confiscating the “obscene reels,” that would be then be “submitted to the FBI lab for examination and comparison purposes.”
The memo noted that Abbott was not alleged to have engaged in the interstate transportation of “obscene matter,” the term the memo used to refer to the films.
Abbott was one half of Abbott and Costello, the legendary comedy duo best remembered for their rendition of the “Who’s on First?” skit.
