EU Ponies Up Millions For Child Porn Fight

The European Union's communications ministers have marked over $54 million to fight online child pornography between 2005 and 2008, almost twice the funding allotted their first so-called "Safer Internet Plan."

"The decision to allocate [over $54 million]… underpins member states' commitment to tackling the evil of child pornography," said Ireland minister of communications Dermot Ahern, announcing the allocation during a meeting of the communications ministers.

The money will be used to promote safer Internet use, new online technologies aimed at protecting children and blocking child porn, and the legal battle against such material, not to mention improving hotlines for public reporting of "dangerous" Net content.

Some of the money will also be involved in "effective anti-spam enforcement," the communications ministers said.
