On August 8, the Erotic Museum will host an event to honor the legendary adult performer John Holmes, who would have turned 60 this year if he had not succumbed to AIDS in 1988.
Event organizer Bill Margold has invited a number of people from the adult industry who worked with Holmes to come to the event. “It’s a way for people to spend the night with those who knew him and those who blew him,” Margold said.
John Holmes: the Man, the Myth, the Legend, a new documentary on the famous performer by Red Luci Pictures, will be screened in the theater of the Erotic Museum
Margold has also been busy collecting video testimonials from random people on the street to demonstrate the lasting impact of Holmes career.
“His importance to the industry was that he came along and became a legend within the first four or five years he was in the industry,” Margold said. “His name was a household name as far back as 1969. He was common radio gossip in 1969. Lovelace didn’t come around until 1972. Chambers didn’t come around until 1972.”
Holmes was a controversial figure within adult, and was reputed to have been a police informant that ratted out adult producers during an era when producing adult entertainment was illegal; something that some people say makes him unworthy of remembrance. “He’s not a hero, he’s a legend,” Margold said. “Everyman wanted to be him, and every woman wanted to be with him. Or at least have sex with him.”
The event has been dubbed “Fit for a King” in honor of Holmes’ nickname, “The King.”
Tickets for the event will be sold at the door for $13. Proceeds will be contributed to Protecting Adult Welfare (PAW), and organization that attempts to better the lives of those in the adult industry.
The Erotic Museum is located at 6741 Hollywood Blvd. “Fit for a King” will start at 6p.m. and is expected to be over by 9p.m.
