Retired softcore porn star Erica Gavin says she’s delighted that her 1970, X-rated cult movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is being re-released by Fox Home Video on DVD this month.
Gavin told the movie Web site retrocrush.com that she considered herself a “hippie girl” when she made the movie, living the life of sex, drugs and rock and roll as she hung out with members local rock bands.
“My favorite [band] was Love… I got to fuck and suck them,” said Gavin, who is now 58.
The movie featured Gavin as a member of an all-girl rock band which goes to Hollywood to find its fortune, but ends up falling under the influence of a perverted music mogul, nymphomaniacal porn stars and an assortment of sex-crazed characters.
Having been a stripper at 17, Gavin began making softcore movies in 1968 by then maverick filmmaker, the late Russ Meyer, who cast her in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Although excited about the prospect of doing a movie, Gavin said she was apprehensive about doing a lesbian scene.
“He made his fingers like scissors. He’s like banging. Now it’s funny. Then, I was scared. I was like you want me to grind crotch with this girl on film?” she recalled.
“So when it came time to do it, whatever I was doing was not right. He didn’t like it. He started yelling at me, ‘This is the key to the whole movie. This is not right!’ He would send me to my room to think about it.”
