E-Chatter Tricks Child Porner Into Turning Himself In

An Internet chat room member pretending to be a police investigator told a Saskatoon man he was busted for child porn, prompting the man to turn himself in to the real police and face a July 7 sentencing date.

Miles G. Janzen was jolted enough by the chat room encounter that he went to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in early January to ask if he was under investigation, according to the Edmonton News, which said he agreed to let police search the home where he lived with his parents and his computer.

Investigators recovered images of children in sexual activity including two infant images, the newspaper said, plus about 65 images of children five to 12 years old and 195 of children 13-17 years old, not to mention a CD ROM with over 100 similar images and 53,000 short text messages including chat room discussions in which he talked about his preference for very young girls.

Janzen pleaded guilty in March to possession of child porn. A judge heard sentencing submissions May 26 which called for conditional sentencing that included counseling and a $2,000 child welfare donation, the News said.
