The Senate Finance Committee is considering a proposal that would tax pimps and prostitutes and provide jail time for those who don’t pay.
Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, who sponsored the bill, said he hopes the measure would reduce prostitution and put pimps in jail for not paying their fair share of taxes, the NewYork Times reported.
Under the measure, Congress would authorize about $2 million for the creation of an office in the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation unit to investigate and prosecute pimps and prostitutes who violate tax laws.
Grassley complained that sex trafficking is on the increase and that it continues to exploit young girls many of whom have nowhere else to turn.
Current law requires prosecutors to prove that a prostitute’s or pimp’s income has not been reported, but under the proposed measure, pimps could get up to 10 years in prison for every prostitute who hasn’t filed a W-2 form.
