China's First Net Porn Prosecution Coming

With China's government already well involved in a nationwide porn crackdown, the Communist country's first known Internet porn prosecution is set to get underway in August.

Deng Minjiag will be prosecuted for violating Chinese law against copying, producing, publishing, selling, and spreading pornographic materials for profits, and could end up being sentenced for ten years to life if he's convicted, according to Interfax-China.

"A lot of evidence including pictures, disks, texts, and other items submitted by the procurator's department is under investigation now," the judge in the case, Hu Lian, told Interfax.

Deng is far from the only defendant facing an Internet porn prosecution in China. Four other prosecutions are pending, including the case of a 17-year-old, all of which involve what Chinese media called "the setting up of Websites to spread different kinds of pornographic material including movies, novels, and pictures." Another suspect, Rong Chao, is accused of hacking a Tianjin server and setting up a porn site there.

The Chinese porn crackdown has included the previously-reported takedowns of a reported 700 domestic adult Websites and 224 arrests from June 16 through June 26. Most of those arrested are expected to see some prison time, Chinese media said.
