Bud Lee smiles when he’s asked about his latest Spice Studios movie, The Sex Whisperer, set for release on Sept. 28.
“It’s a couples movie, but it has enough sex that the guys are going to want to watch too,” Lee says.
“I think some people are tired of gonzo and they want to watch something that’s a little more interesting.”
And he may be right.
Lee’s recent big-budget Fly Spice: The Virgin Flight, did great numbers this summer for Spice and its follow-up, the newly-released Fly Avy, is meeting with similar expectation from the studio’s bosses who see Lee helping bring back audiences to their feature titles.
“He’s got a great imagination and he knows what he’s doing,” said David Stidham, vice president of sales and operations for Spice Studios.
Having gotten his start in the business in the 1980s, Lee cut his teeth on features which were shot on film and where acting went hand-in-hand with performing sex scenes. It may not have been high art, but porn movies had their storylines even if it always ended in a messy cumshot all over a girl’s chest.
But even as gonzo titles replaced the almighty feature, Lee changed along with the times and produced his own share of plotless sex titles for a variety of studios.
“To me, a movie has to have a story,” he says.
“You have to know why a girl is going to fuck a guy.”
His dalliance with gonzo ended quickly, as he returned to features and continued to explore erotica in his own way with sometimes unusual stories and often with great-looking starlets.
Even as it seemed features were going the way of the dinosaur, Lee earned AVN awards for his work, and also earned a spot in the AVN Hall of Fame for his contributions to the industry.
He is known for such notable titles as 1999’s Wildflower, and 1998’s Appasionada both from Adam & Eve, and 1993’s Centerfold, from VCA, among others.
But in recent years, his movies have become more popular, thanks to a growing couples market that sees porn not as an aberration, but as a key to a romantic evening.
“A lot of people forgot about women,” he says.
“The women see the movies as a legitimate form of entertainment and not an objectification of their sexuality.”
With high-end digital cameras, expensive sets and A-list casts, Lee is helping to brand Spice Studios in the couples market by making titles that deal with actual issues affecting relationships as well as the hot sex.
“Couples can relate to my movies in a way that makes them want to watch to the end,” he says.
His latest, The Sex Whisperer, shows couples having real problems that force them to seek help from a self-styled sex guru or sex whisperer.
“He basically tells the women what they need to do to get what they want. And of course there’s a lot of sexual tension and frustration, but that’s what happens in relationships.”
With a cast starring Rita Faltoyano, Brittney Skye, Syren, Lisa Ann, Alyssa Knight and Brooke Haven, Lee brings out hot women who can deliver hot sex scenes as well as they can perform a dramatic role.
“Rita is just amazing. I love watching her work,” he says.
“The movie has a lot of twists and the girls are all great. But the sex in the movie is just amazing.”
