In an interview with a German newspaper, Microsoft founder Bill Gates predicted that DVDs would be obsolete within ten years – at the latest.
Gates prediction of the demise of DVDs was prompted by a question about Gate’s vision of the future of entertainment.
“If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments published in the German daily Bild.
Gates envisions a not-so-distant future where television, ”will simply show what we want to see, when we want to see it. When we get home, the home computer will know who we are from our voice or our face. It will know what we want to watch, our favorite programs, or what the kids shouldn't be allowed to see."
Of course, it should be noted that Gates has a vested interest in DVD going away – Microsoft has invested heavily in a number of digital delivery platforms that would enable users to live in the type of future he describes above.
