JM Productions' contract girl and AVN and XRCO Female Performer of the Year Ashley Blue hasn't let her awards go to her head — she's the first to admit that she's an attention whore, a woman who'll do anything for attention.
"I hate to admit it, but yeah, I'm an attention whore. I think that's why I end up doing some of the more extreme things I've done," Blue told AVN.com.
Not that Blue's beating herself up about it — she's just addressing the focus of Ashley Blue's Attention Whores,the second line of videos she's directing for JM Productions.
"That's what every girl is, especially every girl in porn. It's not negative, but it's how it is, they love attention and will do anything for it," Blue said.
The concept of the series is simple, according to Blue, who says each segment begins by asking each of the performers about their favorite subject — themselves.
"Attention Whores is a tribute to the attention whores in porn," Blue said. "I barely ask questions and they just go off about themselves. They talk about their hair and how they are doing this, or doing that, or how so-and-so director loves them."
The performers demonstrate their egocentrism even during sex scenes.
"They all speak in third person. Like, 'Vanessa Lane here riding this dick,'" Blue said. "It's funny and it's cute. 'This is Ashley Blue, Female Performer of the Year, and this is how I suck a dick.'
Blue says Vanessa Lane stood out in the debut volume of the series as the perfect example of an attention whore.
"She's one of my favorite new girls. She's so funny. She can bend all over the place because she has done yoga or something," Blue said. "I barely needed to tell her anything. She was making the right faces, complaining about needing to get out early, demanding that her hair get done in a certain way — it was exactly what I wanted."
Blue admits to having prompted a few performers during the interviews, but says most of the women she has shot for the series have been naturals.
The debut volume of Ashley Blue's Attention Whores includes scenes from Blue herself, as well as Trina Michaels, Hillary Scott, Deja Daire and Vanessa Lane.
Taylor Rain and Victoria Spin are two of the women in the second installment of the series, which Blue began earlier this week.
Sexually, the series is straightforward, or, as Blue describes it, "Girls getting fucked by guys. It's holy, under God, a man and woman — the way people should be having sex," Blue said.
Behind the camera, Blue knows what she wants in a sex scene.
"Spontaneity. When you feel comfortable and you're having a good enough time working that you can do things without having to be told to them. When people feel open to do things without asking to do them or being asked to do them. When everyone has a cool attitude. It is what it is, it's just sex. It's not important, but we're here enjoying ourselves."
As a performer herself, Blue has insights into creating the right environment for getting her performers to produce the type of scenes she wants as a director — she encourages everyone to have fun.
"I make it fun, the whole day. Nobody is allowed to take themselves too seriously. A lot of the little things that go wrong aren't big issues on my set," Blue said.
Blue also credits Jim Powers, the director who shoots the majority of her performances for JM Productions, with helping her out as the camera guy for her own projects.
"Jim Powers still does a lot of stuff for me. He helps think of stuff on the spot, we come up with crazy ideas," Blue said. "I just laugh all day and go home with a big smile on my face."
