AOL Pulling Out of Broadband in Southern U.S.

America Online is telling existing broadband customers in nine southern U.S. states to find a new broadband provider by January 17, this just a few months after AOL decided to stop signing up any new broadband customers.

Spokesperson Anne Bentley told reporters that any broadband customers who don’t find new broadband service by that deadline would be moved back to traditional AOL dialup.

AOL has been encouraging customers in Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina to take advantage of a new high-speed broadband being offered by BellSouth at a special promotional rate, the company sending those customers a series of e-mails promoting the BellSouth rate.

AOL is expected to phase out existing broadband customers in the rest of the U.S. over the coming year.
