LOS ANGELES—During the Sundance Film Festival in January, there was plenty of buzz about Sean Baker’s Tangerine, which got as much attention for its filmmaking methods—it was shot on iPhones—as it did for its subject matter, which the Hollywood Reporter described as “humanizing, prejudice-challenging immersion into the lives of people who inhabit L.A.'s low-end drug and sex industry.”
Turns out what is even more interesting about the production, at least to those of us at AVN, are some of the cast members. According to director Baker, adult performer Ana Foxxx is one of the standouts in the movie.
This week Foxxx attended a private screening of Tangerine, which was an official selection of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. A buddy comedy about transgender prostitutes in Los Angeles, it is director-writer Baker's follow-up to Starlet. Also listed in the credits of Tangerine are other adult performers: Katja Kassin, Scott Lyons and Mia Hurley. (On a side note, Starlet also featured well-known XXX players, among them Asa Akira, Manuel Ferrara and Zoe Voss.)
Foxxx landed a walk-on role in the film and looks to star in more cinematic projects in her quest to cross back over to mainstream. The statuesque beauty began her career as a runway model before crossing over to adult acting in 2011.
"It was lovely and a blast working with Sean and I'll do it again," Foxxx said. "The movie captures the spirit of L.A. and portrays it authentically. My role was very fun, and the film is compelling and intense.”
Baker said, "Ana is a natural. She took a minor character in Tangerine and transformed it into one of the most memorable characters of the film. Her comic timing, subtlety and ability to bring depth to a character is on par with seasoned professionals who have worked decades in the business. She is one of the stand-outs of Tangerine and I know she has a bright future in acting.”
Since her career began, Foxxx has appeared in over 150 scenes and has been featured in top productions for Hustler, Penthouse, New Sensations, Diabolic, Hard X, Kink and Girlfriends Films. Her mainstream projects include indie films All-American Bikini Car Wash, directed by Nimrod Zalmanowitz, and Toy, directed by Patrick Chapman. In Tangerine, Foxxx plays a call girl who doesn't give a taxi driver exactly what he's looking for.
Favorably reviewed, Tangerine is currently is seeking U.S. distribution. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “fierce energy courses through every frame of this scrappy mosaic of Los Angeles street life, which centers on two black, transgender prostitutes working the blocks around Santa Monica and Highland. ... It's the warmth and absence of judgment or condescension toward its marginalized characters that make Sean Baker's film such a vibrant and uplifting snapshot.”
