AEBN Makes Deal in Japan

AEBN (Adult Entertainment Broadcasting Network) has gained a recent foothold into the Japanese market.

With a marked hesitance towards doing business with Western companies and censorship laws dating back centuries, the Japanese market has proven a difficult one for American adult entertainment companies to penetrate. Aside from getting their own product into the Asian market for Japanese customers, AEBN has also gained a significant amount of Japanese content for the rest of its global customer base to enjoy.

Stringent Japanese censorship laws make it illegal for any type of publication or movie production being released in that country to show male or female genitalia, so Japanese filmmakers and publishers must digitally obscure the areas in question using a post production technique referred to as ‘mosaic’ which covers the objectionable material with a pixilated ‘blurred’ image.

AEBN has added to their titles and studios available to their customers by signing deals with a number of Japanese companies to provide content and in one day alone, received one hundred new titles from Japanese studio Dream Station. AEBN has procured enough Japanese titles to create an entire ‘mosaic’ category for their customers, but since none of these titles are restricted to the pixilated variety, AEBN also offers non-mosaic Japanese content alongside the digitally covered ‘mosaic’ titles.

“I think we’ve done a great job of penetrating into the Japanese market,” says Scott Coffman, president of AEBN. “We have made a calculated effort on our part to reach out and to try to build some type of partnership in the Japanese market.” Coffman recognizes the importance of this endeavor for his company. “We feel that the Japanese market is completely necessary for us to be a worldwide corporation. By not being able to penetrate that market, it’s really not acceptable to call ourselves a global company.”

AEBN has partnered with E-Station, a Japanese television satellite company, after their E-Station executives expressed an interest in doing business with AEBN. The contract will give AEBN the rights to stream all content sent to them by E-Station.

AEBN has also found Japanese sources for their news including Boyslove.co.jp which has begun carrying AEBN news content on their site, including a recent announcement of a contest hosted by AEBN affiliate LustyLibrary.com and Adam & Eve, a marketer of adult products.

The growing ties between AEBN and the Japanese market have expanded other world markets as well by making Western content available for the Japanese consumer. The recently completed deal with bustling German studio Megafilm, now makes it possible to offer ‘mosaic’ content to the Japanese consumer.

As Coffman points out, it’s a new and expanding market. “We estimate that in the years 2006 and 2007, Japan should become one of our biggest markets, and we should be able to see greater expansion of our company.”
