Some of the greatest directing talents ever to walk the face of the earth have trod the ground of Chatsworth: John Ford, William Wyler, George Stevens, Raoul Walsh, Buster Keaton, Roger Corman. Among many others, they all helmed productions within the city limits of pre-Porn Valley at the Iverson Movie Ranch, a much-used location since the filming of Vitagraph's My Official Wife in 1914. In the late '60s, noted kink auteur Charles Manson got behind the camera for some Family footage of his sexy flock in nearby Spahn Ranch. And speaking of ranches, what once was Bonanza's lush, expansive Ponderosa is just down the road from AVN headquarters.
Of course, Hoss never took a milky splooge load to the chin, and the legendary, volatile Ford never screamed into the canyons of Chatsworth as he staged interracial anal scenes. The days of the mainstream Hollywood presence here may have passed, but footage of a different nature continues to roll. And, though the current local directing talents may never be referenced on Inside the Actor's Studio, the artists calling the pop shots are no less creative in their own realm than the long dead cinematic souls of yesteryear.
What follows is a collection of thoughts on making porn — from features to gonzo — compiled from individual interviews with a random sampling of directorial talent. You will also find a comprehensive listing of all currently active directors, divided into five categories: Auteurs, Feature Directors, Gonzo and Other Non-Feature Directors, Performer-Directors and Foreign Directors. For space reasons, we've limited ourselves to brief descriptions of their work and a key title or two.
AUTEURS
These are directors whose work has not only a personal stamp, but an artistic ambition that takes it to another level. They each have a distinctive look, instantly identifiable, and a set of themes they keep returning to. Individualists and strivers, they include suave veterans and edgy newcomers. It's not a matter of imitating Hollywood. Only Avalon is currently making plot-driven features, though Leslie, Ninn and Stagliano have excelled at those in the past. And it's not a question of genres or niches. The plotless, wordless eroticism of Blake, Joone and Zion create a niche of their own. Sky's synthesis of porn, music and fashion makes him unique. Like him, each of these directors seeks to raise the bar for porn, to enlarge the possibilities of the adult medium.
James Avalon —Elegant visuals, finely tuned editing and Hollywood-worthy stories, often with a sci-fi/fantasy bent, are the trademarks of this Hall of Famer whose consensus masterpiece is Les Vampyres (Metro, 2000). This year, no release is as eagerly awaited than James Avalon's Darkside, the first feature from Red Light District Films. ... Andrew Blake — XXX has been hard, XXX has been artistic, but master filmmaker Andrew Blake made XXX beautiful — and has won more film and cinematography awards than any other director. Janine Lindemulder's "ice dildo" scene in his Hidden Obsessions (1992) is well remembered, and his more recent work, for his Studio A Entertainment, with Dahlia Grey and Aria Giovanni, continues to top rental and sales charts. Even his first film Night Trips (Caballero) — selected by AVN in 2001 as the greatest Adult title of all time — remains popular. ... David Aaron Clark — A long-time critic for Screw magazine, Clark got the directing bug in '98, creating his Asianatrix line for Extreme, and later the award-winning Asia Noir and Zen and the Art of Fellatio series for Video Team. His love for Pacific Rim ladies inspires him to work that is both subtle and almost psychedelically erotic. ... Red Ezra — The physically imposing Texan is one of Adult's premiere big budget vignette directors, helming more than 25 titles since 1994, including such acclaimed fare as Wicked's Fast Cars & Tiki Bars and New Sensations' Hearts and Minds, which won an AVN Best Art Direction Award in 2003. ... Joe Gallant — Almost single-handedly revitalized the pro-am genre with his highly individualistic, New York-based sleaze for his Black Mirror Productions (The Luv Generation, AVN's reigning Best Pro-Am Release), the rocker/porner recently hooked up with VCA Pictures. ... Joone —As co-owner of Digital Playground, he has created his personal brand of high-end adult entertainment, with dazzling visuals and dialogue-free eroticism, best viewed in his Island Fever trilogy. John Leslie — The AVN Hall of Fame performer-turned-director all but ruled the mid-to-late '90s with such visually dazzling classics as Dog Walker, Drop Sex and Fresh Meat: A Ghost Story (all for Evil Angel), and while he may no longer be quite as cutting edge, he still regularly produces superior lines like his long-standing The Voyeur and new series such as Gobble the Goop. ... Eon McKai—A stylistic breath of fresh air aiming at the porn/punk/goth/alt crowd, Eon McKai debuted with Art School Sluts last year and followed up with the much-anticipated Kill Girl Kill this year, both for VCA Pictures. ... More recently, he founded his own company, Ninn Worx (distributed by Pure Play Media) and the move seems to have inspired him to even greater visual heights with such stunning titles as In the Garden of Shadows (the XRCO's reigning Best Video) and the less flashy but return to hardcore basics line Neo Pornographia. It's easy to see why the AVN Hall of Famer is one of the most honored of all Adult directors. ... Laurent Sky — French-born fashion photographer who has quickly become one of Adult's supreme stylists with such titles as his 2003 debut, Fetish: The Dream Scape for Ninn Worx (AVN's Best All-Sex Title of that year), and Raw Desire, the first production from his own company, Sky World, an Editor's Choice in this issue. ... John Stagliano — One of the very most acclaimed, influential directors of all time — arguably the most acclaimed, influential director of all time — Stagliano is an Adult icon who was instrumental in launching the Gonzo revolution with his "Buttman" persona (The Adventures of Buttman, Evil Angel Video, 1989). He is the founder of the Evil Empire pantheon of A-list hard-edge directors (John Leslie, Jules Jordan, etc.) and later helmed the landmark fetish-meets-hardcore production The Fashionistas, which dominated the 2003 AVN Awards, taking home 10 statuettes, including Best Film and Best Director. ... Marty Zion — Zion splashed onto the XXX scene last year with Metropolis (Nectar), an AVN Editor's Choice, but his videographic artistry, incorporating masterful editing and enticing soundtracks, has remained unabated through half a dozen more hits, including Liquid, Space 2077, Illumination and his Mystified series. ... Jack the Zipper — Young Turk made an auspicious debut in 2004 with the daringly distinctive Stuntgirl (Clockwork Productions/Hustler Video), which took home several AVN Awards, including Best All-Sex Release. His eagerly anticipated White Witch is due to cast its spell before Halloween.

But whatever the genre, Zupko's frequently anal-intensive, decidedly non-couples sex is among the hardest, most squalid out there.
GONZO AND OTHER NON-FEATURE DIRECTORS
It's no surprise that these guys and gals make up the longest directors list in this package. Gonzo, non-feature fare is the overwhelmingly dominant porn genre since it's less expensive to produce than plot-oriented features, but just as importantly, is the fare of choice for the solo stroking consumer who merely wants to cut to the chase, get off on the good stuff, then, if they really wanna catch some acting, plot and dialog, pop in the latest Netflix disc. These shooters understand that and for that, we salute them.
