Adult Store Owner Faces Criminal Charges

Police arrested the owner of an adult book and video store on charges the store failed to meet state regulations for adult businesses as well as criminal charges of making the store a nuisance by allowing the store manager to live in it without proper bathroom facilities.

Police arrested manager John A. O’Brien, 61, of Philadelphia, and store owner John Bordone, 62, of Mantua Township, after investigators discovered a number of health and safety code violations as well as criminal violations at Florence Adult Books, the Trenton Times reported last week.

The two men were charged with maintaining a sexually-oriented business as a nuisance and of illegally copying recordings. They also were accused of failing to post signs to restrict access to minors which violates the state business code for sexually-oriented businesses. O’Brien was also charged with possessing a machete behind the counter, which is deemed an illegal weapon under New Jersey law, police said.

The store, on the 2000 block of Route 130, also was in violation of state law for adult businesses by having eight viewing booths that had holes cut out between them.

O’Brien told police he had been living at the store, which had no running water or bathroom facilities. The building was closed by authorities, deeming it a health hazard.
