Adult Book Store Defies City Ordinance

An adult bookstore here will remain open despite the fact it is barred from operating by a city ordinance.

Last week marked the end of five-year grace period for the owners of Downtown Book and Video to operate on the same block as a mosque and must now move, WCCO-TV reported. A local measure prohibits adult businesses to operate within 600 feet of places of worship.

But store owners Dennis and Tammy Buchanan won’t leave, their attorney Randall Tigue said, adding that they may sue the city if it tries to close the store or force it to move.

It’s unclear how the City Council would rule on the issue. It could extend the grace period or order the store to stop selling adult materials.

Tigue said moving the adult store is a violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution.
