Phil Harvey, president and founder of Adam & Eve parent company, PHE Inc., was honored last week with the Humanitarian Award by the American Association of Sexuality Educators and Therapists.
The event, held on June 30 in St. Louis, was part of the organization’s 38th annual conference attended by some of the top names in sexual education.
“I am proud to be recognized by such fine and compassionate group of professionals,” Harvey said. “It is an honor to be part of your organization.”
Lloyd Sinclair, a longtime organization member and Harvey’s colleague at Adam & Eve, hailed the veteran industry member for his contributions to the promotion of civil, sexual and human rights.
During the ceremony, Sinclair highlighted important turning points in Harvey’s career such as his initial business of selling condoms by mail in 1970 when such sales were illegal, as well as his efforts on behalf of Adam & Eve during its battles with the Justice Department over First Amendment rights which culminated in an end to a government strategy to close down adult businesses between 1986 and 1992.
Sinclair also told of Harvey’s plan of instituting a screening process for all Adam & Eve videos that ensure that the company offers only “sex positive” material. Harvey’s philanthropic work also was highlighted, such as his ongoing contributions to programs that promote reproductive health, family planning and AIDS prevention in some of the world’s poorest areas.
