DETROIT—What do professional basketball, adult entertainment and Twitter have in common? A lot of publicity, if you’re DaJuan Summers, the ex-Hoya forward who was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 2009 NBA draft and officially signed by the team last week after an impressive showing in the summer leagues.
Summers, like a lot of young men, also enjoys his Twitter account—dsummers35—and Aug. 4 he posted up that he had entered into a friendly competition with his friend, porn star Valerie Luxe, to see who could reach 4,000 followers first.
“I have just been challenged by @ValerieLuxe to race to 4,000 followers, so you guys can’t let me lose.. I NNED HELP LOL,” the young Piston tweeted.
Ashton Kutcher versus CNN it isn’t, but the mainstream media has been having fun with the story nonetheless. In fact, the Detroit Free Press is encouraging its readers to follow Summers as a sign of support for the home team.
“If you want to help our Piston win, follow him @dsummers35 on Twitter,” Free Press sports writer James Jahnke wrote. “We won't even give you Val's account, seeing as the franchise needs some good Twitter mojo after forward Charlie Villanueva lost his race to 50,000 followers to Toronto star Chris Bosh.”
Thus far, the hometown boy is leading, if not beating the pants off, the hometown girl, with 3,526 followers to Luxe’s 3,370.
Luxe can be seen on FreeOnes and Naughty America, and in December of 2008 was featured in Digital Sin’s Stretched Out Snatch 9.
Billed as the NBA vs. Porn, this race is clearly too close to call.
