LANSING, Mich.—The far-right Republican lawmakers who introduced the so-called Anti-Corruption of Public Morals Act have explicitly written in the proposed bill that virtual private networks (VPNs) and other "circumvention tools" are to be blocked under the proposed ban.
The proposal is House Bill (HB) 4938, which far-right Republican state Rep. Josh Schriver proposed as a leader of his colleagues, per AVN's reporting on the measure.
"Circumvention tools" are defined in HB 4938 as "any software, hardware, or service designed to bypass internet filtering mechanisms or content restrictions, including virtual private networks, proxy servers, and encrypted tunneling methods to evade content restrictions."
"It’s shameful and a complete waste of tax dollars for such a proposal, and if need be, I will appear before the Michigan legislature to oppose this insanity," said Corey Silverstein, an adult entertainment industry attorney who practices law out of his Michigan office.
It remains unlikely that HB 4938 will become law.
