European Commission Officially Releases Age Verification App

BRUSSELS—The European Commission has officially released its long-awaited digital age verification application that covers the entire bloc of the European Union and its digital space. The announcement came on Wednesday from President Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the executive branch of the multinational union.

"It is our duty to protect our children in the online world, just as we do in the offline world," stated President von der Leyen. "And to do that effectively, we need a harmonised European approach. ... This app will allow users to prove their age when accessing online platforms. Just like shops ask for proof of age for people buying alcoholic beverages in a shop."

The app is designed to integrate with digital wallet apps and is compatible with mobile devices and computers. The app can ultimately serve as an AV solution for accessing the age-restricted internet, including social media websites and adult entertainment platforms. AVN previously reported on the development of the app and how it was designed based on a coding framework used on the COVID-19 vaccination application adopted by over 70 countries on four continents.

"Europe offers a free and easy-to-use solution that can shield our children from harmful and illegal content," von der Leyen added. "And we see more of our Member States making great progress. France, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, and Ireland are front-runners. They are planning to integrate the app into their national wallets.

"The new age verification solution and the enforcement of our rules go hand in hand. Children's rights in the European Union come before commercial interests," von der Leyen concluded. "And we will make sure they do."
