BERLIN—The Digital Intimacy Coalition (DIC), a network of over 95 experts, civil society groups, businesses and survivors, has published an open letter to the European Commission demanding it finally convene a promised roundtable with the adult-content and digital-intimacy sector.
This letter is part of a continued effort by Open Mind AI, a campaign run by the Coalition to champion the adult industry in AI regulation. This effort began in 2024, when DIC sent its first open letter to the Commission requesting participation, a move widely reported at the time.
After a no-show at the Porn Film Festival Berlin 2024, in which the Commission pulled out from a panel at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts, it has promised engagement but rejected several invitations from DIC. Those working on the campaign deem this halting a stigma issue.
“It becomes clear that the Commission refuses to engage with the adult industry due to prejudice. Several other groups have been engaging and are heard,” says Ana Ornelas, DIC’s advocacy officer. “Everyone loses in this situation, since we have precious insight that could help policymakers provide a safer online environment for all.”
This engagement becomes even more urgent as AI-Generated adult deepfake content is used in coordinated attacks against prominent women, X’s Grok is accused of promoting CSAM and NCII, and OpenAI moves to offer erotic content for its users.
“It’s so obvious adult content is one of the biggest use cases for AI,” asserted Levi Letor, DIC’s PR and media officer. “Making decisions about regulating it without involving those most affected by it doesn’t make any sense.”
In its second open letter, signed by multiple stakeholders across the adult and digital rights sector, the Digital Intimacy Coalition calls on the Commission to uphold its commitments and engage in dialogue that can meaningfully shape the future of AI regulation in Europe and beyond.
“The time is now,” Ornelas concluded. “We want to protect those who are vulnerable and promote sexual freedom in a safe way. We have the solutions and are eager to contribute.”
