LOS ANGELES—Bluesky confirmed on Wednesday that it is implementing age verification measures in the U.S. states of Wyoming and South Dakota. This is in response to the local age verification statutes and social media safety laws, the company notes.
"Bluesky users in South Dakota and Wyoming can choose from multiple methods to verify their age. We believe this approach currently strikes the right balance," reads a statement from the company. "Bluesky will remain available to users in these states, and we will not need to restrict the app for everyone."
The company adds, "We’re committed to keeping our community informed as we navigate these new regulations."
Bluesky has chosen to adopt Kids Web Services (KWS), an age assurance tool developed by Epic Games. Epic is the developer of the popular video game "Fortnite."
Bluesky announced last month that users from Mississippi IP addresses will be blocked due to compliance issues with a controversial social media age verification law that is central to ongoing litigation in federal courts.
Bluesky has become popular among adult content creators and studios due to its lax policies on nudity and sexually explicit material.
