LOS ANGELES—A Southern California-based special effects artist is crowdfunding through Indiegogo to make a dildo version of the unusual new LGBTQ icon, The Babadook.
Billy Raygun (yup that’s a pseudonym to allow the mainstream artist some anonymity in the world of sex toys) said on the crowdfund page site he has already completed a full sculpture for The BabaDong, and will take it to the production phase only if the $15,000 goal is met, otherwise backers will be refunded their money. There is still a month left in the campaign, and as of post time six backers have raised $352.
The BabaDong features the long arms and creepy smile of The Babadook, but the original character’s top hat has been modified so The BabaDong can be inserted. The dildo also features a flat base, making it harness-compatible.
“The idea for the BabaDong hit me recently (just in time for Pride month!) and I thought it would be a great way to put out a fun product, and help a cause I'm passionate about at the same time,” Billy Raygun wrote in the Indiegogo description. “I am a huge supporter of LGBTQ rights. If this campaign takes off I will be donating 10 percent of the profits to The Lambert House.”
The Babadook—the children’s book monster that comes to life in the 2014 psychological horror movie of the same name—has become an icon of sorts for the LGBTQ community. Memes featuring the “villain” started popping up in late 2016, not long after Netflix users reported seeing the film mistakenly filed in the LGBT category of the streaming service. Since that time, any number of journalists and bloggers have created think pieces about how The Babadook is the perfect queer icon, with its dramatic persona and flamboyant/grotesque costume and the uprooting and chaotic effect is has on a traditional family.
Regardless, it seems The BabaDong, if funded, could become the latest entry under Rule 34.
