David Adamson, co-owner of Miami’s D&E Productions, a “premium amateur” studio featuring college-jock-twink-frat dudes, never thought he would be producing gay adult videos. A mortgage broker, he visited a client’s adult video store and discovered amateur porn for the first time.
“I grew up with the superslick Jeff Stryker and Falcon products,” he says. “I could never imagine making that kind of adult video. When I saw the Dirk Yates and Bobby Garcia movies with just regular guys and natural, improvised sex — and you could hear the director’s voice and all that — I thought, Hell, I can do this!
"In college I took radio and TV production, and minored in photography, so I had some skills. In 2002, we made our first solo and oral videos called Hot Cum Boys and Miami Street Boys on VHS. Our sales were encouraging on AMVC, PornTeam, and on GayAmateurVideos, but a surprising number of customers wrote requesting that we do anal-action scenes. With Fuck Buddy Boys, sales tripled and it went through the roof.
"In 2003, Marina Pacific, Pacific Sun, and IVD started to distribute us, and we switched from VHS to DVDs exclusively to stay current with the industry trend. Many of our older titles were directed by me, but Michael Boyd, an experienced Internet-sex director, came to me and told me I had to use more attractive models and improve my packaging."
Boyd began directing for D&E and his debut video, Shane's Addiction, "took us to a whole new level and became one of our best sellers," says Adamson. "Prior to that we'd filmed various themed-videos such as glory hole videos, medical fetish, and barebacking films. We have decided not to do more barebacking videos. Our sales of safe-sex movies proves to me that you can do a great safe-sex amateur video with hot guys and great action scenes without compromising sales.
"We continue to film our medical fetish series, College Boy Physicals, featuring T.J. Cody as Doctor Rimmerman. Some of our newer titles are Got Fuk’d and Got Milked and we will be starting a gay reality line, Seymore Dicks. This takes place in the home of a fictional character named Seymore Dicks who gathers straight and straight-acting gay and bi guys into his living room and talks them into having sex parties for his camera.
A few months ago, D&E started an online wholesale site, DandEVideo.com, and they also sell their titles to consumers online at the similarly named DandEVideos.com. Their membership site, which has different content, is AllBoysVideo.com.
"The home-computer and store-rental customers are, in my opinion, two different worlds with different tastes and needs," Adamson concludes. "I think the future of the industry is with amateur videos and direct sales from producer to customer via the Internet. The big companies are going to have to be more price conscious in order to compete with us who produce gay adult amateur videos," he predicts.
