Octagon fighter Megan Fiore is a badass, as illustrated by her smacking around two catcalling guys on the sidewalk on her way into the gym, and casually stripping off her tank top and donning a sports bra as last night's paramour Bilbo Shaggins tries to book a second date until she sniffs, "It was ... alright." When she spies a stack of unpaid bills on gym owner Juan Lucho's desk and sees two hoodlums leaning on him ("Where’s the fuckin' money?") the plot wheels start to spin. Lucho interrupts Fiore's locker-room tryst with Shaggins, and Shadow Dimitri and calls her to his office for a talking-to: "Are you serious with this sport? Then you train with me. We start tomorrow. 8 a.m. Don’t be late."
Elsewhere, octagon fighting champion Angie Lynx is facing overexposure fatigue, manager Danny D tells her, showing her an online headline asking who is her next opponent ... "and who cares?" D has an idea about finding an unknown challenger to increase interest in her next bout, and they celebrate his good idea in the sparring ring. You can leave your championship belt on.
In their first workout, Lucho is impressed with Fiore, and tells her, "I think you may be ready to fight." She responds with a defiant, "Sign me up," and when Lynx offers an open challenge, Fiore—now Lucho's bedmate and a contender with a few fights—becomes a credible opponent for Lynx, who used to be an item with Lucho. When D offers a fight contract to Lucho, sweetening the deal with a couple of fight groupies from Lucho's own boxing career, he takes the bait, twice, leading Fiore to catch him in the honey trap and angrily sign the fight contract and cut ties with Lucho.
After a trash-talking press conference, D finds Fiore in a hallway and tells her she's only here to make Lynx look good—"I have to protect my investment"—and hands her a fat envelope with an ominous, "Make the right decision, or I'm out to destroy your fucking career before it begins. Nothing personal. Just business." And then D adds that Lucho bet "a hundred fucking grand on you to win this fight ... I guess he can kiss goodbye to that shithole gym of his." At the big event, Fiore downs Lynx with her first punch, and Fiore and Lucho forgive with a celebratory set-to in Lucho's gym.
Well-shot and well-acted, Uncaged is a good addition to Danny D's plot-driven portfolio.
