Two creative forces in erotic cinema collide in this edgy drama, and the results are explosive. Sitting in the director’s seat is BurningAngel founder Joanna Angel, but this time working with Gamma Films head of production Bree Mills. A scrappy talent who knows how to get the most out of every dollar when producing for her own studio, Angel blossoms here with the resources of Mills’ Pure Taboo studio at her disposal. And the Pure Taboo style of storytelling benefits from Angel’s quirky sense of humor—though the overall mood is dark. Pitch black, in fact.
At the center of the story is the unsavory relationship between two step-siblings, acted out with conviction by Small Hands and Kenzie Reeves. Their respective parents, played by India Summer and Tommy Pistol, are the downwardly mobile denizens of the world’s most depressing trailer park, and Small Hands wants out—especially after he gets a load of squeaky-clean Joanna Angel, who’s the antithesis of everything he sees at home. Will he be able to break away? No spoilers given here.
In addition to powerful performances by all the players, A Trailer Park Taboo is also elevated by dramatically gritty cinematography and a moody soundtrack. It’s clearly a Pure Taboo production, but Angel’s pop culture sensibilities add a fresh twist. For the cinephiles out there, it’s like watching a mashup of Elia Kazan’s Baby Doll with a camp classic like High School Confidential!
