Ever wonder what the crew and adult cast members of those "Pippi Longstocking" movies do in their spare time? Apparently, they're loaned out to make mediocre "European Erotica" features, of which The Way She Was is an unremarkable example.
The film tells, in flashback style, the bawdy reminiscences of a middle European prostitute (Sandra Nova) in the early 20th century, from her participation in a coed jailhouse orgy and a carriage ride tryst to a sumptuous banquet for a Russian nobleman, in which she is included as a dessert. Most of the scenes are played for comedic as well as erotic effect, as evidenced by the voices on the badly-dubbed soundtrack. This voice problem is one of the drawbacks on most imported productions, as it tends to distract the viewer from the on-screen action. And make no mistake about it, this is not a softcore feature; the sex sequences here are adequately, if unspectacularly, staged. Nova, to her credit, strikes a fine figure, as does Sigi Buchner as a frustrated hausfrau turned courtesan.
I suppose adult film aficionados who get bored with homegrown product might want to sample foreign fare. If The Way She Was, however, is the way it is with such movies, then perhaps we should listen to Bob Hope and buy American.
