Synopsis

Ryan is a marriage counsellor who deals with the sexual issues that couples face. His colleague Rachel refers Anna and her husband to him with the warning that he should try not to fall in love with her.

Reviews

Couples counselors Rachael Cavalli and Ryan Mclane juggle clients and their love/hate relationship with each other in this latest edition. Cavalli has her hands full with client Codey Steele ("Should we be doing this?" "No. Do you want to stop?" "No!") and has referred battling couple Anna Claire Clouds and Ryan Driller to Mclane with the warning, "I know the wife pretty well through a yoga class, we've been taking, so it's too personal to take them on as clients. She is wonderful. Don't fall in love with her."

After a somewhat-unproductive session with Clouds and Driller, Clouds furtively calls Mclane with a whispered, "I think he's having an affair—can I talk with you about it?" Turns out she has been tracking Driller's car and wants Mclane to suggest she and Driller have a separation, telling Mclane, "I'm counting on you," and following up with a lingering kiss—and abrupt exit.

The suggestion upsets Driller ("Looks like a bad business model, man") but after he stomps out, Clouds pulls a note out of her bra and tucks it in Mclane's pocket. CUT TO: Clouds and Mclane in bed, half dressed. "I could lose my license." "Do you really want to stop now?" "Absolutely not." Driller takes his solace in the arms of Andi Avalon: "What exactly is a 'trial separation'?" "I don’t know, but whatever it is, it means I'm technically single ... it definitely sounds better than 'cheating on my wife.'"

Mclane, now smitten with Clouds, is disappointed to find that the separation has driven her back into Driller's arms ("That's great," he says, with an insincere smile), and Cavalli admits that she set Mclane up to be Clouds' hall pass as we witness Clouds and Driller reconciling.

Writer/director Mike Quasar's crackling smartass dialogue ("Your promiscuity is helping pay my mortgage") hides some depth in the interpersonal dramas going on between the players.
