Store owners beware: Sex With Strangers is not a hardcore video. This is a brilliantly executed cable-caliber documentary that follows the lives of three swinging couples, through their idealistic intentions to the reality of having to juggle multiple relationships. Managing a relationship with one partner is often hard enough. And though these couples generally intend to bring others into their sphere simply to fuck, inevitably the addition of outside personalities generates conflict. Directors Joe and Harry Gantz relentlessly capture every moment of internal conflict and personal suffering on video. And the people whose lives are captured in this film hide nothing.
Sex With Strangers is the type of documentary that HBO would love. All three couples give of themselves completely. Sara, Julie and Calvin are three 20-somethings caught in a destructive triad. Calvin is a manipulator who convinces both girls to have an open relationship with him because he doesn't want to have to decide between them. But since the girls are initially against fooling around with each other, one of them is inevitably left out on a nightly basis. This leaves Sara especially perplexed and upset, since Calvin has already sworn to her that he plans on marrying her. (The twist at the end is priceless.)
We are basically introduced to Gerard and Shannon on the day that Shannon tells her mom that the two of them are swingers. She seems confident and strong in her lifestyle choice - almost as if the choice to be swingers is more her doing than his. But as the documentary proceeds, it turns out she is anything but strong.
James and Theresa, on the other hand, turn out to be the most well adjusted of the bunch. These two travel around to nightclubs in their RV, pick up on either single girls or couples and bring them into their mobile home for some alcohol and extracurricular fun. They are surprisingly successful.
Sex With Strangers provides a very unique look not just into the lives of these three couples but also into the swinging lifestyle in general. This one won't satisfy your customers' need to stroke it, but it will certainly exercise their noodles. This is one film worth watching from start to finish.
