"Porn parodies are not a place for originality or creativity." So Danny Wylde comments during his speech here on the "rules" of porn parodies, and while it's one of the movie's funniest lines, it also happens to be a highly ironic one, as few releases to come out of Porn Valley in recent times have exhibited the creative spirit, at least, of this one.
Scream: A XXX Parody does the original franchise one better by casting nearly everybody involved as him or herself, all on hand to shoot a porn parody of the fictionalized version of the Scream series within the series (Stab) that was supposed to be based upon the "actual" events its characters had been through. So not only do you need a healthy working knowledge of the Scream films to truly absorb the multiple layers of lampooning going on here, you need an even healthier one of porn.
Toward the beginning of the movie, having such a knowledge actually hurts the comedy value—without giving away the joke, it comes off as totally forced to see a director as meticulous as Eli Cross cutting in the middle of a scene, exclaiming that the setup doesn't make any sense and telling the performers to just start fucking. On the other hand, the monologue James Deen delivers halfway through about "porn geniuses" is hysterical ... provided you're familiar with everyone he references.
Regardless of how much of a porn aficionado you may be, though, this sort of indictment of porn parodies via one is a very fun watch, with some very hot sex. In particular, the opening boff between real-life couple Lily LaBeau and Danny Wylde, and the close-of-show stuffing Sarah Shevon gets from Rocco Reed—including anal—are both eminent stroke fodder.
Eli Cross may be thumbing his nose at the porn parody machine, but we can only hope he sticks by its controls, because he brings a unique freshness to the table that could just keep it interesting.
