Personals is a deep, personal look at... "the actual people who read, place or answer ads like this." But who cares? This type of item is no longer shocking (if it even was in 1972, when this was made). Personals is but a series of filmed black and white interviews interspersed with actors portraying the very acts the interviewees have just described.

Some of the characters are interesting. "Jeanette," a transvestite, is wonderfully witty and compelling (and, boy, has she got great legs!). Also, the young lesbian is refreshingly down to earth. But...the sex never gets going, and it is enough to make you find the Kinsey report erotic. The vintage scenes involve intertwined bodies with unsophisticated production techniques and poor genital closeups, while the women barely move (still awake, dear?). Some may find this type of early erotica arousing...or at the least, vaguely interesting. And others may find it, as I did, worthless. Personals is certainly a film for personal tastes.
