Since Karl/Lorimar took the Playboy Video releasing reins from CBS/Fox nearly two years ago, we'veseen all sorts of spin-offs boasting the famous bunny silhouette. There's been Playboy centerfold tapes issued on a regular basis, as well as Playboy video calendars, massage tapes and even sports competition programs. But the keystone of the Playboy-on-video concept has remained the hour-long magazine-styled show with centerfolds, personality interviews and sexy features. After reviewing the most recent magazine offering, we're happy to report that things are, in fact, better than ever.

Playboy Magazine Vol. 10 begins hopping right from the start, with a risqué comedy routine by roly-poly stand-up Rick Ducannon. Possessing a body like John Candy and the nasty humorous streak of Richard Belzer, Ducannon elicits some quick laughs with his tell-the-truth manner.

This is followed by a snappy look at pin-up girls through history. Jane Russell, Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable are spotlighted in a collage of stills and wartime footage that eventually lands on commercial territory with a tribute to Hugh Hefner and the birth of you-know-what. However, it's the archival material that makes this segment a must.

The two profiles on the tape feature 9 1/2 Weeks' director Adrian Lyne and photographer-artist David Goldner. Lyne, an impish Brit who could pass for Dudley Moore's brother, is open about his views of sex and filmmaking. Goldner's section plays like a mini-PBS art show in heat. We watch "the successor to Vargas" create erotic art by painstakingly painting over canvass-size photos of models while commenting on the work. Enthralling.

Less artistic perhaps, but equally exciting, is a funky vignette called Buzzed. A magnificently endowed, blonde traveling saleswoman becomes the target for a persistent bee that keeps landing on her body while she's driving through the desert. She rips her clothes off in hopes of chasing the little bugger away. There's a nifty surprise ending here, but it's the traveling saleslady you'll really want to see.

Other features include a spicy music video with Playmate Rebekka Armstrong set to Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman, and Judy Norton Taylor — Mary Ellen of The Waltons —struts her stuff in the same manner she did in a magazine pictorial.

Playboy Video Magazine is a winner.
