Shot-on-video is a great equalizer. It can make a pedestrian director look competent and can make an award-winning director look average. Here, deRenzy manages just by the hair of his chinny chin chin to escape the median. Prom Girls has the essential style of a compilation tape with wraparound footage.
Shanna McCullough plays the dean of the Cumberland School For Ladies on the eve of the big prom. McCullough’s afraid the girls will be promiscuous. They are – in various segments with stuff-shirt (that alone clues you in to what’s going to happen) McCullough trumping around the halls of ivy looking through symbolic keyholes. Eva Allen and Joey Silvera play out the best segment of the bunch with Silvera as a dressmaker who insists on measuring up Allen, including her panties, for a prom gown.
Superior technical qualities and enough enthusiasm in the sex scenes override a premise better left for the mainstream (e.g. Private School For Girls). Nevertheless, Allen is one of the few quality surprises of this essentially weak video season.
