In the bed, in the bath, at the ball—faithless husband Christophe Clark seemingly fucks all the women and fights all the men in this lavishly-produced period piece.

The film starts off rather slowly, the story unfolding around three pedestrian sex scenes. Things improve considerably about forty minutes in, when Clark pays a visit to his mistress' inner chambers through her back door. And when Jennifer Jones longingly reminisces about her youthful trysts with horse trainer Gerry Pike, all the elements come together to create a truly sad and haunting sequence, by far the most effective in the picture.

Technically, the film is uneven; the dubbing is poor, and on rare occasions, one wonders if the camera operator was looking through the viewfinder. Still, the picturesque locations, elegant costuming and dramatic storyline make for a combination that's sure to please couples.
