When adult filmmaker Paul G. Vatelli, best known for his work in the Swedish Erotica series, passed away last August, the big theatrical hit at the time was Top Gun. Hot Gun, one of Vatelli's last features, is a skillfully made pastiche of that movie that will serve as a worthy capstone to the man's career.

Set in a Navy flight school, just like its inspiration, Hot Gun follows fighter trainees Eagle (Candie Evans) and Zapper (Steven Drake) in their friendly rivalry to be the top student, as well as their growing sexual attraction to each other. If you ever wondered just how cocky the jet jockeys in Top Gun and The Right Stuff really were, watch as Drake and his comrades Jerry Butler and Randy West handle Penny Morgan, Sheena Home and Krista Lane in some "close order drills." Evans shows that she, too, has the "stuff" in her recollections of former partner and lover Peter North (in a dreamily-shot flashback) and her eventual "re-union" with Drake.

Vatelli's typically fine production values are in evidence here. Stock Navy footage is carefully interwoven, there's no skimping on sets or crowd scenes and we're given a story that flows just as naturally as the original (which may, of course, be damning with faint praise). Much more so than features that blatantly advertise themselves as "couples videos," Hot Gun is a sensitive and highly erotic tale that should please anyone looking for exciting maneuvers, military or otherwise.
