Living proof that there is life and sex appeal after age 40, Sally Kirkland plays an unrelentingly sweet woman named Melanie Rose who happens to have a Reubenesque body that just won't quit, and a bad habit of attracting bozos like hospital syringes to the ocean.

Guilt is at issue here. Melanie's been screwed over by men all her life, and handed an eight year-old daughter from one of those lousy affairs. She shruggingly submits to a life off the streets and stripping in seedy beer joints as a form of punishment. A chance meeting with an equally angst-riddled Gordon Gekko-type, Wall Street financier John Stratton (Robert LuPone), who's been mugged outside her apartment building, starts a weekend of some of the most improbable boy meets girl situations with some of the looniest wordsmithing since Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

Kirkland, who wants out of the biz, gets beat up by her pimp. LuPone gets beat up. They, in turn beat up the pimp for two grand he owes Kirkland; the pimp kidnaps her daughter; LuPone wagers his life in a game of Russian roulette with the pimp's boss, Richard Lynn who basically loves Kirkland, to get back the daughter; and LuPone gets shot by Lynch, stitched up and rushes in to work so he doesn't miss the stock market closing and the change to bag another million. Then he has the balls to stand up Kirkland for a date after all that, but not before he slips her a guilt-heavy check for one hundred grand. Some weekend.

Kirkland, who fills out an off-shoulder dress more sumptuously than any actress since Marilyn Monroe, is a fascinating woman to behold in this film. In one camera angle she's high heel glamorous and gland-achingly erotic, in another shot she's drab and treadmill vulnerable. LuPone, unfortunately, comes off as a stiff in tight shoes, afraid to wrinkle his Armani suit for the sake of the house and kids in New Jersey Kirkland wants so badly. But Kirkland throws off enough steam to press out the wrinkles and get her way. Love, sex and Wall Street money conquers all, you'll be happy to know.

Get this one – especially if your tastes run to the offbeat.
