In this odd, sexually stunning and off-the-wall little film, Henri Pachard achieves the most out of a seemingly small budget. What he gets is fabulous performances from his leads, Colleen Brennan and Herschel Savage, and an adult film that can only be described as. . . different.
Savage marries Brennan, a prostitute who seems to attract sordid customers, so that he can gain U.S. citizenship. He pays Colleen with money that he stole. . . from her. They form a partnership of sorts, trying to rip off some people for money, attempting all the while to pay off Colleen's sleazy pimp.
One of the ways she pays him off is to have wild bathroom sex with a high-class prostitute (Sharon Mitchell), her sleazy date (Paul Thomas) and Savage as well. Another payment involves teaching runaways Tom Byron and Patti Petite the fine art of live sex acts for the pimp's club.
Savage and Brennan seem to have a real fondness for each other, as they realize by film's end that they really only have each other, amidst a crazy and cruel society. As viewers, we get a wide array of sex -- varying from hot to too dark -- to enjoy. It's a minor technical flaw, however, that doesn't detract from the film's weird flavor. The aforementioned two scenes are the hottest, as Brennan seems to get better with every performance, both in the sack and out.
Otherwise, the film has a very grainy feel, that actually works in its favor. The people in Getting Personal are raunchy and the mood of the film works well on 16mm. Pachard gets points for maintaining that sleazy mood.
