Well, any adult tape that starts out with a speech against nuclear weapons can’t be all bad.  On the other hand, this rather tepid blend of eroticism and spy thriller doesn’t have too much to recommend.

Aside from the title, Dr. Stangesex’s only connection to Dr. Strangelove is that both feature scientists in the lead, in this case Jerry Butler as a government physicist whose overactive sex drive makes him a security risk.  So, off he goes with bodyguard Billy Dee to Brazil, unaware that Russian agent Gina Carrera is waiting for him.  When she is “persuaded” to let the Doc live, KGB terminator Kevin James is sent to eliminate all parties, leading to a fairly dramatic conclusion.

Strangely enough, the “legitimate” scenes in this movie work better than the sex shots do.  The opening sequence, in which Butler is seduced by a female assassin, is well-made, but the sex that accompanies it is uneventful.  What’s worse, the next two erotic scenes are nearly identical in their “choreography!”  Really!  I’m not kidding!  At first I thought I hit the “playback” button on my VCR by mistake.  A “Diamond-In-The-Rough” award should go to Sondra Stillman, who conveys a very striking presence in her appearance, as well as cutting a fine physical figure that reminded this reviewer of Melanie Griffith in Body Double.

The prognosis for Dr. Strangesex?  Limited success, hampered by a pedestrian sex and a cast who for the most part look as cold as the “cold war.”  Thank goodness it came out after the Geneva Summit!
