Anna Claire Clouds and Robby Apples are a made-for-each-other couple waiting to happen, but they're too busy one-upping each other to notice. Queenie Sateen hips dating-app newbie Clouds to the bait-and-switch known as "catfishing"—"When a guy posts a picture and then shows up for the date looking more like Lord Voldemort than Ryan Gosling"—and suggests she date Apples, to which she responds, "He's my buddy! He's like a little brother to me. Nobody wants to date their brother."
"Clearly, you don’t watch a lot of porn," Sateen responds, before pointing out that her current squeeze Mike Mancini catfished her, sort of, by posting a portrait picture taken before his hair turned grey.
At a bar, Apples runs into old flame Millie Morgan, who solaces him after he's stood up by a dating-app connection. When she says, "I'm really sad about the way things ended between us," he responds by remembering that she "threw all my shit in the dumpster behind the 7-Eleven." She reassures him that he's in no danger now, "therapy is going really well for me." They have a drink together and take it from there.
Clouds spots what happened as maneuvering by Morgan, who catfished him into showing up at that bar, irritating Apples as he chafes in Clouds' Friend Zone. Clouds tries her luck on the app, texting back and forth with Ryan Driller and telling Sateen, "He's almost perfect!"—making her livid when she finds out it was really Apples catfishing her.
This leads her to find the real Driller ("Reverse image search. He wasn't that hard to find," she tells Sateen) and date (read: fuck) him, but in the post-pop afterglow, she says, "Thanks, Robby"—quickly covering by saying that's a friend who inspired her to take chances. But when things sour with Driller, Clouds pops back up into Apples' life after ghosting him. She's still mad about his catfishing stunt, but willing to forgive.
Mike Quasar's smart-assy script serves as a framework connecting the sex scenes. No angst, no heavy drama, just clever badinage and fucking.
