Hereis one adult video where you can pull the sex scenes and still have a storyline that's refreshing, funny and enjoyable. It took about three years before someone got around to doing a send up of Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose, and you won't find too much missing from the original except for some gender switches and a couple of occupational changes. Mike Horner, who is just about the most versatile of the current male performers, paints his character - Don Vito Boombach - in the broadest strokes possible, making writer Steve Menhoff's heavy ethnic concentrations far from heavy handed.
Instead of down and out comics, we have borderline-successful underworld types reminiscing over some pasta, vino and a red and white checkered table cloth. The subject of their anecdotes is one Fanny Rose, a former stripper turned Broadway talent agent. It was a marvelous career move decision for Fanny (Penny Morgan), because she can't bump and grind worth a nickel, but, brother, she looks phenomenal in a slinky black dress. And like the original Rose character she uses her wiles to get some crummy acts honest-to-goodness employment.
You might find the sexual element played down here in favor of character, but in this case it was a good move. Director Paul Vatelli's direction is outstanding throughout the feature, and the editing is top notch. Mike Horner, who's played everything from mad scientists to gurus, adds one more zany characterization to his make-up kit.
