Neither the shot-on-film feature Carnal Instincts, nor the all-black wall-to-waller Fade 2 Black, is an award winner on its own merit; but the transfers to DVD and the addition of some solid DVD bonuses spice up the packages a bit. Both discs include a half-dozen chapter stops (with a full-motion menu), Dolby Surround Sound, a slide show, brief bios of their respective casts, and all-region coding; side B of each disc is loaded with synopses and previews for current and upcoming Metro DVDs. Both discs are copy-protected.

On our review copy of Carnal Instincts, the front-left audio channel drops out at the 30:20 mark, the signal then coming and going every few minutes until the end of the film. We contacted Metro regarding the problem, and they informed us that the disc we had received was part of an initial test pressing of 100 copies. These test runs, which they perform for every new DVD release, are for review by the press, as well as to check for any possible defects in mastering or duplication. The problem, we are told, has been eliminated from the copies which are shipping to stores.
