Tendres Cousines, David Hamilton's latest softcore opus, is filled with the director's recognizable charms: soothing, soft-focus photography and innocent, teenage sexual participants searching for their sparks to be ignited for the first time.

Here, ace photographer Hamilton adopts the frothy French farce motif, posing his young performers against the backdrop of a French farmhouse around the onset of World War II. The plot, as many Gallic comedies have it, is quite complicated, as 14 and 15 year-old cousins – garcons and filles – roll in hay, swim nude, politely undress and occasionally make love calmly amidst the picturesque rural settings. Making the film unique for Hamilton aficionados is the participation of older players – post-adolescent sisters, uncles, aunts.

Those who enjoy Hamilton's other films, like Bilitis, A Summer In Saint Tropez, and Laura, may either be pleased or disappointed with these tender cousins: delighted with the nubile, feathery-skinned newcomers; rejected over the emphasis on story-line and characters.

Still, Tendres Cousines offers sexual situations whipped into a smooth, sensual soufflé. Well, not really whipped. Maybe that'll be in the next David Hamilton project.
