The ads promised all the singing, dancing and special effects of the Michael Jackson Thriller music video. But once inside my VCR, Joyce James’ Driller quickly proved a far cry from the MTV mainstays as well as its adult film contemporaries.
Louise (Taija Rae) is infatuated with the rock star Driller (Mr. J), a Jackson clone who attempts to sing, dance and look like the effeminate super star. After seeing Driller in concert Louise goes home for a quickie with nerdish boyfriend Dan (Dick Howard), and then falls asleep to dream about the “Hot Star.”
But the dream quickly becomes a nightmare for Louise – and the audience – as Driller turns into a werewolf. The hairy, yellow-eyed beast could be considered a “were-horse” because of the size of its sex organ, which can rotate like a power drill (complete with sound) as he uses it to violate Louise and send her into her nightmare.
The entire movie is pretentious, relying on name recognition with the well-known Thriller video and the Jacksonian image. Dimly lit scenes and the quick flick of the editor’s knife have left the sex scenes appearing cold and detached.
Producer/director Joyce James has paid too much attention to mediocre dancing and singing and not enough to acting and sex. As a result, Driller comes up short in providing entertainment in either category.
However, there is a dose of political humor thrown in as well as an homage to the cult favorite Rocky Horror Picture Show. But Driller needs more than that to turn it into a good sex flick.
