I've finally realized that someone actually could find the perfect way to maximize the impact of the shot-on-video genre. I watched the first two volumes of Erotic Zones, and to my delight, discovered that with the right script, actors and a director who knows how to use cameras and lights, video can be almost as effective as film.
Once you view Erotic Zones, Volume 2, your standards will immediately rose. The women aren't the greatest looking, but the sex is certainly hot. The erotic scenes are used perfectly, to punctuate three creative scripts.
The best segment, the opening, has a wax museum janitor (a fanatical film buff) making love to a classic screen legend who turns from wax to real life. The sex here is marvelously crafted with Billy Dee and Jeanie Pepper adding a subtle mystique to the scene.
In segment two, playwright Paul Thomas discovers that by using his video display terminal, he can make his created characters come to life as sexual fiends.
And trampy runaway Aurora finds a magical ring that turns her into a rich, glamorous woman, with Nick Random turning in a very effective performance here.
Everything seems right with Erotic Zones, all the way down to the accurate Rod Serling impersonation. These are videos that keep my interest up, just like the best feature films. My only suggestion is that in future volumes, director Vatelli inject some humor into the segments. These stories are eerie at times, very close to the feel of some original Twilight Zone episodes. You'll be impressed with that aspect of Erotic Zones as well, the best shot-on-video tape of 1985 so far.
