In 1970 most of America was content to hope for a flash of gash when out to view an "art film." Laws concerning the making and distribution of adult materials were strict, although quickly loosening up. What helped the breakthrough was this film, among others. Sexual Freedom in Denmark offers a very serious look at the lifestyles of the Danish underground. Interviewers catch 18-year-old women off-guard when they ask whether these "new" women have relations with their boyfriends. The girls always reply "yes," and they are then asked to turn toward the camera. In 1970, that would have been enough for most men to get hard, the idea that a young woman enjoyed sex . . . frequently. It was enough to make your head spin at the time.

Now, in 1986, we find ourselves faced with an "Anal Assault" in adult films, and the Meese Commission calling the shots on censorship. Believe it or not, this film is beginning to seem timely again. What is wrong with the pursuit of individual happiness, vis-a-vis adult films?

It all makes sense to me. This movie is the kind you would like to keep on your shelves as sort of an historical piece. As far as turn-on potential, well I don't know. I was titillated a few times. And it sure was nice to see a fresh face after all these "Lynns."

What makes this movie somewhat of a classic is that sex is portrayed as something positive and healthy. Something that has sorely been missing in the current trend in shot-on-video. Maybe we should all watch this movie one more time.
