Spirit of Seventy-Sex, filmed in the late 70's, has an innocence that is missing from today's crop of porn flicks. Watching Spirit is like seeing an old friend after an absence of several years to have a pleasant chat, but then realize that you have very little in common.

Spirit of Seventy-Sex, a bicentennial tribute to the sexual prowess of our founding fathers, follows Ebeneezer Batholomew, an old geezer who was around back in 1776, as he sets out to dispel the myths about the historic men. For example, did you know that Paul Revere's "One if by land, two if by sea" was really a signal to his paramour of the moment, as to where they would tryst? And what about Ben Franklin being the village's resident lecher? Wait'll you see how he stuffs a young woman's crumpet!

Annette Haven is lovely as Martha Washington, and her scenes with George are quite good. But again, this movie is a few years old. It is interesting to see how different a porn film is without the moans and groans, heavy breathing and shrieks of pleasure. Actually, from today's standpoint, the sex is rather dull. And, in some scenes we are definitely watching dated material. Btu Haven performs with a skill that is timeless, and she overcomes the lack of today's super-charged passion with style. Unfortunately, she's not in enough of the movie.

Basically, some of the vignettes score better than others. And there are some technical faults – especially the poor dubbing. But overall, Spirit of Seventy-Sex is a nice little ditty, with humor, cute buns, and an enjoyable reminder of what porn used to be. (There's also a great anticensorship message at the end, proving that, indeed, some things never change.
