Boy, does this one sneak up on you! It opens with minimal credits rolling out the first three scorching starlets over a sweaty, steamy hard and dirty scenes between Lili Marlene and Alan Adrian that really gets them and the viewer going. Lili is heard above the music murmuring "I can't believe this" and you believe her. As they recover from their passion you find out that she doesn't usually do this but she had tried on a black, sequined dress that had belonged to Mae West and something came over her.
The dress is on its way to a money-losing thrift shop run by Nina Hartley, Paula Meadows and Danielle. From here the dress does its job, as it makes some wonderfully funny and clever rounds on different women and even on a man. the cast, as you can see, is marvelous. They are the cream of the crop and each scene is special —from the set and the photography to the dialogue, acting and especially the imagination involved in mounting the sex scenes.
Pamela Penn wrote the story and deserves special mention for her effort. This is one of the few times in adult films that a simple device has been used with fluidity and consistency. Each character uses and abuses the dress wittily (it is ejaculated on, used to wipe up spills, run over and wrung out) yet the movie is not just a series of vignettes. The passing of the dress has a logical reason and it becomes a character in itself.
Although it is difficult to point out one sexual stanza over the others, the scene with David Morris (the memorable macho from the pool table scene in Insatiable) and Miss Charlie Latour really strikes my fancy. He is a wimpy, submissive sex partner for a rich lady who loves fantasy. She dresses him up in garter belt, black stockings and the infamous dress. But the dress makes him super macho. This outrageously dressed guys says "suck this, baby!" and she loves it. The scene works. That is the triumph of Fashion Fantasies; it is funny and hot at the same time.
