In All The Right Places is obviously a labor of love, and it shows. Eric Edwards, the writer, producer, director and editor of this minor miracle, is gambling. Are there enough adults (who enjoy sexually explicit material, but who are tired of the non-story-oriented junk) to appreciate a sensitive, character-motivated video? I hope the answer is a resounding "yes," because if it is then this could conceivably revolutionize the entire industry.
The structure for the video is not exactly unique, but it does the trick. In All The Right Places is designed as a series of fantasy sequences as imagined by two readers of a new erotic fiction book. As the reader, Carolyn Connaly and Johnny Nineteen provide a welcome change to the market's usual faces. They look like real people: attractive enough, but hardly awe-inspiring. That's good, because it's easier to relate to them as individuals. Nineteen turns in a particularly good performance as the butterfingered bachelor. After literally bumping into Connally at the bookstore, he proceeds to spill his drink on the book and ends up reading it in loose, soggy pages.
Connally reads two fantasies, the first of which is represented by Karen Summer and muscular Francois Papillon. This warm passionate romance by the fireplace is especially well shot by cameraman Jack Remy, who deserves a lot of credit for making In All The Right Places look far better than the average video feature. Meanwhile, Nineteen proceeds to gape as stunner Nikki Randall and Breezy Lane convince Randy West to join their health spa with a home introductory course, replete with hot oil treatment.
Edwards manages to cram a variety of sexual daydreams, and a brief understated story about the meeting and personal romance of the two main characters into 77 minutes. And it works! Production values are topnotch, with atmospheric lighting and a variety of well-designed sets by Ron Vogel.
In All The Right Places is a big step in the right direction for adult video. Certainly it's graphic, but the story and characters are worthwhile enough that even a scapegoat hunting board like the Meese Commission could hardly find it objectionable. It does its job (to stimulate) but doesn't insult your intelligence. Although this video is light years away from a mainstream erotic film like Body Heat, In All The Right Places is still the most thoughtful, funny sensual production to appear on the adult market this year.
