Scandal chronicles the sex affairs that rocked the British government in the 1960's, when minister of war John Profumo and sexy Christine Keeler (Joanne Whalley Kilmer) were having an affair while the young woman was having a simultaneous affair with a Russian naval attache. When the smoke cleared, Profumo resigned. Keeler and her pal, Mandy Rice Davies became sordid celebrities. And Dr.Stephen Ward (John Hurt), the man who set up Keeler's affairs, was put on trial as a pimp.
This movie has all the steamy sex that could augment a good drama, but with director Caton Jones at the helm, it's pretty slow. We see the sex parties (the famous orgy scenes existed from the American Theatrical release) the humping with the sheets over the couples, but the nudity is tame. Despite excellent performances by John Hurt and Kilmer, who is hauntingly beautiful, the movie is plodding. Should do well in stores, due to its controversial theatrical run.
