This seems to be the month for would-be classics that fall just short of the mark. Like Mannequin Man, this Vivid title holds much promise. The plot centers on an off-campus fraternity that recruits its members on the basis of sex appeal and willingness to “experiment” rather than grade point averages, money or athletic status. The cast is a convincing assembly of clean-cut, collegiate types, and technical quality is damned near perfect.
But the erotic quotient is uneven. Three scenes are unsurpassed classics of their genre: Lowe’s “first-time” seduction by Adams, Ladd’s poolside seduction by Manchester (or is it the other way round? The ambiguity works beautifully) and Kelly’s solo workout with a dildo for initiation night. Unfortunately, they are surrounded by a fairly mundane solo from Carlton, a muddled threeway and a disappointing climax with Ladd.
A good deal of effort went into the production with a variety of outdoor scenes ranging from beach to desert to basketball court and a consistently careful attention to detail. Buy next time, guys, let’s keep the temperature boiling throughout. Good package.
